The Crystal Project facilitates Cairde Maithe, a volunteer visiting services for people with dementia living in North Cork.

Cairde Maithe means good friends and this concept is at the heart of what we do. By matching volunteers with a person with dementia in their area with similar interests, hobbies and pastimes,  we hope to create lasting friendships.

We aim to support social inclusion and encourage ongoing links with the community. In doing so, we hope to help combat the stigma and loneliness associated with living with dementia.

Cairde Maithe” is always on the look out to recruit volunteers to visit a person with dementia in their area. For more information on the service click on the Cairde Maithe leaflet (below) or if you are interested in volunteering with us, click on the Information for Volunteers leaflet (below).

So what’s involved?

  • We look for a commitment of just two hours a week for an intial period of six months
  • We provide a full induction programme and ongoing information sharing sessions to help support our volunteers
  • Matches and visits are arranged by mutual agreement
  • Visits may include going for walk together, listening to music, flower aranging, a game of cards, a cup of tea and chat

*Please note all volunteers are Garda Vetted*

‘I love when Mary comes to visit, we chat together and make tea. She’s really nice and she has a dog too’ Eileen, matched with Mary through Cairde Maithe

‘It was really nice when Bridie’s daughter introduced me to the neighbour as Bridie’s friend. I feel we are friends now’ Patricia, matched with Bridie through Cairde Maithe

The Crystal Project has other volunteer opportunities  – we are also looking for people to help at our recently launched Memory Café.  This monthly café meets on the third Saturday of the month in The Gilbert Centre in Mallow and we need volunteers to help with teas and coffees and to chat to those attending.
